Why Does the FAG Bearing Lose Effectiveness

According to the formation mechanism of the grinding skin on the surface of the FAG bearing, there are two main factors that have a great effect on the grinding skin, namely grinding heat and grinding force. How does the grinding heat occur? During the grinding process, because of the touch of grinding wheel and work-piece, the FAG bearing brings about a great number of energy and grinding heat. Thus the part of the grinding area suddenly produces the high temperature. The instant high temperature results in the oxidization of the working surface and other changes such as amorphous composition, high tempering, secondary quenching, cracking, burn and so on. For the failure of the FAG bearing, the surface oxide layer, amorphous tissue layer and high-temper layer are the relatively main reasons.

The so-called surface oxide layer is formed through the reaction between the steel surface and oxygen in the air under the instant high temperature. The oxide layer is quite thin. It is just about 20~30nm. What people should pay attention to is that the thickness of the oxide layer has the corresponding relation with the total thickness of the surface grinding skin. From this point, it can be concluded that the thickness of the oxide layer has a direct relationship with the grinding technology. At the same time, it is the important indicator for the quality of the grinding.

As for the amorphous tissue layer, it is formed when the working surface achieves the melting state because of the instant high temperature. The melting metal molecular flow is evenly coated on the working surface and meanwhile it is cooled down at a very fast speed by the base metal. The amorphous tissue layer is also quite thin, but its hardness and toughness are very high. Because it has only 10 nanometers, it is very easy to be removed during the precision grinding process.

The third one is the high-temper layer. In the grinding area the instant high temperature makes the temperature of the surface higher than the temperature for the work-piece s tempering. Before the temperature is not achieved to the austenitizing temperature, the surface of the FAG bearing brings about the retempering step by step with the increase of the temperature. At the same time, the hardness is also reduced. The higher the heating-up temperature is raised, the more serious the hardness is reduced.
